What to consider when designing a new home

You’re in charge when you build your own home

There is so much to think about when building a new home that it is easy to be overwhelmed. But with good planning you can easily take charge, so you end up with all the features you want in your dream home.

Here are some favourite features for creating a truly personal and unique space - and maximising your investment at the same time.

Customise your storage

A well-placed built-in media unit or custom shelving that perfectly fits the shape of the room can serve as a focal point and make just as much of an impact as a piece of art.

Add a mud room, or space near your front door. On rainy day you’ll be glad you added a dedicated room or a nook in the hallway near the front door to your design where you have somewhere to take off muddy boots or hang your coat.

High ceilings

Open up your space with higher ceilings. It makes the room look so much larger and maximises a smaller space, allowing you to be more dramatic with artwork. Adding floor to ceiling curtains further accentuates the height of the room.

His and her walk-in wardrobes

Avoid the fights over space in the wardrobe and make your master suite one your friends will envy by designing separate spaces that will give each person more room for clothes and shoes.

Extra electrical outlets

With all the digital devices in our worlds these day like smart phones, iPads and laptops we need lots of places in our homes to keep them charged. Look at each room and figure out how you will use it with your computers and phones and which rooms would benefit from extra outlets.

Be smart

Technology is changing so fast that you can improve your life – and cut your bills - by fully embracing smart devices like smart heating and cooling systems, which will reduce your energy usage. There are even smart fridges that save your grocery shopping list and display recipes.
Look at your powerpoint placements and what you will use in each room and where you will benefit from extra outlets.

Larger garage space

If your land allows it and there is an option to extend your garage, it could be a great place for a workshop and all those tools, a place to store bikes or kayaks, or even put in a home gym!

Our designers can help you better maximise smaller spaces with places to hang things up and create an organised, useable garage.

Our Burbank sales consultants can help you explore the options and incorporate all these options – and more - into your dream home design.
