A few home truths about building a home and all that surrounds it.

What are new home additions?

New home additions are just that- new additions to your home!

They typically involve an extension of sorts to your existing house, serving to transform your existing space and in turn, enhance its total functionality.

A new home addition could be an added storey, a sun-room, an added bedroom or living area- the options are truly plentiful!

Many people choose this option in response to the growth of their family, be that growth a new member being born into the family, the kids staying at home for longer or even the grandparents moving in- if there’s one thing we can all agree on it’s that family dynamics are improved when people have their own space!

Naturally, there are both pros and cons to the new home addition, varying from the cost of the addition to the benefit it could have upon family life...

As the Australian property market remains difficult to break into and advance within (no matter if you live in VIC, NSW, ACT, QLD or SA), many are choosing the option to enhance what they have through a new home addition, with the added bonus of (in most cases) adding value to their property.

Therefore, remaining in the home you have but giving it a little bit of added sparklethrough the installation of a new home addition can be a truly worthwhile option.

If you love where you live, and have no intention of moving elsewhere, then building a new home addition is a great idea!

Whilst almost always adding value to your home, new home additions inevitably cost money.

Though typically less expensive than a knock-down rebuild (which would contain demolition, landscaping and rebuilding fees, amongst others), or building/relocating (which come with stamp-duty, agent fees and more) they will of course still set you back a few dollars. Because of this, we would only advise you to choose a new home addition if you are financially comfortable to.

Having builders in your home, whilst initially a little exciting, can get exhausting and can be disruptive to the typical ‘Zen’ state of the home. Though the end product of your additional space will no doubt be fabulous, new home additions, depending on the scale of the addition, can draw out and take multiple months to complete. For example, if you are adding another storey to your home, that process is likely to take significantly longer than it would to add on a singular room.

Take into account what you can and can’t do on your property- naturally there may be legal restrictions as to what you do (ie. height restrictions if adding a storey, how close you are able to build to the property lines etc.) Make sure you are fully aware of what permissions are required prior to commencing your build!

If you need extra space, love where you live and can afford to make your place sparkle within the restrictions of your council’s requirements, then the new home addition is for you!
